The Rivers State University has announced its plans to support programmes that promote healthy living and build a stadium to take care of sporting activities.
The new Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi dropped the hint while answering questions from journalists at the University during the 2nd edition of “Walk for Life,” a programme initiated by the former Vice Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor explained that already, the University has some sports facilities, but the Stadium will serve for both the University community and other sports lovers, noting that the Governing Council of the University has approved the said Stadium.

Zeb-Obipi maintained that the monthly “walk for life” event will be maintained and sustained, saying that the management did not find it difficult to adapt and consider the programme since it has to do with paying attention to medical profile of the individual.
“I want to assure you that we will add more colour to the monthly event. I will consolidate and build on it. This is more than an exercise, it also for bonding and networking. This is part of social environment,” he said.
He further stated that the monthly walk for life event in not all about him but about the University community, while calling on others to join and take it serious as health is wealth.
In his remarks, the Coordinator of the walk for life, Prof. Joseph Vipene said that the monthly exercise became imperative so that individual and the University community can balance education with good life.
The University Don, who is also a dean and a sports psychologist, explained that the second edition has gathered more momentum and people are also taking the advantage to check themselves medically, especially on sugar level, hypertension, among others.

One of the lecturers, Dagogo Cookey-Gam thanked the Vice Chancellor for approving for the continuation of the programme, saying that a lot of people within the University do not have time to do exercise but with the introduction of the monthly event, they will take advantage of it and be in good health because there are lots of benefits attached to exercise. Cookey-Gam urged people to do more exercise at their convenient time not waiting for the monthly University programme.
Exercise, he said has a lot of benefits such as weight management which reduces the risk of obesity-related diseases and cardiovascular health challenges. Other benefit are, better sleep, increased strength, stress reduction, flexibility, enhance cognitive function, social connection, team work and communication.
