Watch: Hillcrest Library inspires healthy living

THE Hillcrest Library recently hosted an Elderly Empowerment and Healthy Lifestyle Programme that was attended by senior citizens from Ward 7 and surrounding wards.

The event was attended by 120 elderly people and library assistant Nomusa Martini said its aim was to provide much-needed information, support, and wellness activities for seniors.

“The programme was organised to assist elderly community members by bringing together departments and stakeholders that seniors need most.”

During the event, the library also educated attendees on the importance of reading and writing, encouraging them to document the history of their area and preserve family history stories for future generations.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Martini explained that the event is usually held annually in December; however, last year it had to be moved due to a strike that took place on December 4.

“As a result, the programme was successfully rescheduled and hosted on February 4.”

The various departments and stakeholders that were present to offer services and information, included Human Settlements, Mental Health, Sizakala, Libraries and Heritage, Home Affairs, Virgin Active, Kind2Hearing, Waterfall Clinic, and Jess Foord.

The ward councillor, Luthando Jali, also attended the event and showed his support for the elderly in the community.

The day’s programme included exercise sessions, health talks, dancing, and self-defence classes, all aimed at promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among senior citizens.

One of the attendees, Thulisile Hlela (64) from Shongweni, expressed her appreciation for the event. She said the programme helped them access information they previously lacked.

“We will leave here with advice that will help us not to fall victim to scams, as we are easy targets for criminals. I am happy with the various departments that are here today, as I have a problem with my grandchildren’s grant. I am hopeful that the matter will get resolved,” she said.
