These small life changes could extend your life by at least a year, study says

(CNN) – A new study shows how small changes in diet, exercise and sleep may extend a person’s life by a year when combined together.

Larger changes could add as much as nine more years to a person’s life.

Part of the equation involves minimizing or cutting out certain foods altogether, like foods high in sugar.

People who adapt to these changes together may also live longer without suffering from major health problems.

Researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia followed about 60,000 people over an average of eight years.

Those gaining the most benefit in longevity and health got between 42 and 103 minutes of exercise daily.

They also slept between seven to eight hours every night and ate a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish.

Critics of the research said they believe more study is needed.

The study appears in the journal eClinicalMedicine.
