KENINGAU: Sabahans should take charge of their health, and practice healthy living as a way of life for every community.
Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan, said this when launching the Jelajah Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS) and Bulan Malaysia Sihat Sejahtera (BMSS) at the Pisompuruan Open Hall in Kampung Merapong.
Dr Jeffrey stated that good health is the foundation of a productive and resilient Malaysia.
He emphasised that the nation must shift its focus from treating illnesses to preventing them, urging a “Whole of Nation” approach where government, communities, and individuals work hand-in-hand to prioritise health. Caring for one’s body and mind, he said, should not be an afterthought but a daily responsibility that will shape the future of the country.
The event gathered Federal and State leaders, NGO representatives, village chiefs, JPKK members, and local communities in a strong show of solidarity.
Activities such as aerobics, free health screenings, anti-Aedes campaigns, health infotainment and the War on Sugar initiative demonstrated how healthy habits can be integrated into everyday life.
Dr Jeffrey outlined the six core behaviours championed under ANMS, which include staying physically active, nurturing mental health and social connections, eating healthily with controlled sugar intake, avoiding risky habits such as smoking, maintaining personal and environmental cleanliness, and going for regular health and dental check-ups.
With a touch of humour, he reminded the crowd about sugar consumption:
“Sugar – one teaspoon is enough. Less is better, none is best! Sabahans are already sweet enough, so why add more sugar?”
Among those present were Keningau P180 Liaison Officer, Datuk Lawrence Gimbang; Deputy Parliamentary Coordinator for P180 Keningau, Datuk Mohd Ishak Datuk Ayub; Keningau District Officer, Peter Jonu Moinjil; DSP Alizam
Dalaman; as well as department heads, community representatives, and local leaders.
Closing his speech, Dr Jeffrey rallied the community to play their part:
“Health is a shared responsibility. Together, let us build a healthier, happier, and stronger Malaysia.”
