FARGO — A Sanford psychologist is reminding you to look out for friends or family that might be suffering from an eating disorder.
As part of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, she says early signs to look out for are people shortening portion sizes, restricting foods they used to enjoy, along with putting lots of mental energy into tracking what you eat and how much you weigh.
She also says the longer someone waits to address the eating disorder, it becomes harder to treat it and return back to health.
“The more medical issues people have, the more psychological, emotional issues that people have with it. People can start to feel really trapped in it, and it is hard to recover from an eating disorder, to truly recover,” said Dr. Dorian Dodd, a licensed psychologist with Sanford.
Dodd says about 9% of the U.S. population will have an eating disorder at some point in their lifetime.
