COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Nearly 700 women turned out on Saturday morning for the annual Lexington Medical Center Heart & Sole Women’s Five Miler.
The event has been around for more than 20 years, and has encouraged the power of a healthy lifestyle. There is a particular focus on preventing heart disease.
It was co-founded by race director Jeanna Moffett and former WIS 10 news anchor Dawndy Mercer Plank.
“In 2001, my best friend and I, who run so many road races, distance running, short races, we said we want other women to feel the camaraderie we do when we’re out there on the course so what can we do to encourage them in their health and running?” Mercer Plank said. “So we started a race, for women, by women.”
The women-only event features a five-mile run and walk and a three-mile fitness walk.
It ended at Gills Creek Memorial Park.
The event, which paused in 2020 after 18 consecutive years, offered a new location this year in Forest Acres.
In addition to the fitness walk, the women were given the opportunity to participate in an outdoor health and wellness expo at the park.
