Memphis chef shares tips for healthy and flavorful eating

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – As Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare gears up its third annual Healthier 901 Fest, Action News 5 is highlighting ways to live a healthier lifestyle.

From physical health to mental health, one of the biggest hurdles for many of us is healthy eating.

Whether you’re trying to cut calories or boost protein, experts like Chef Ragan Oglesby-Phillips say what you keep in your kitchen is key.

“The simpler your meal is, the healthier it is,” she said.

Chef Ragan owns Perch 74 Bistro in East Memphis. She knows how crucial proper nutrition is for your overall health, especially since she’s on her own health journey.

“My recommendation is to always read the package.”

Understanding serving sizes and nutrition facts, like how good fats work versus bad, or the right carb intake, is also important and can yield big results.

“Using low-sodium things that taste delicious,” she said. “Using herbs in place of a lot of salt or heavy sauces, heavy creams.”

If snacking is your weak spot, Chef Ragan offers this advice:

“I would recommend granola, I would recommend a pistachio, I would recommend a walnut, a pecan, because a lot of times it’s the crunch.”

Crunch time arrives on Saturday, August 30, when Chef Ragan joins hundreds of Memphians dedicated to wellness at the Healthier 901 Fest at Shelby Farms.

You can catch one of her cooking demos at the Kroger tent.

“We’re going to do a fish taco bowl. It’s healthy, and delicious, and they’re going to have samples and menu cards, and we’re going to have fun,” she said.

A recipe for success that starts with planning ahead.

“Create lists, set goals, be intentional and really research… and practice!”

The Healthier 901 fun begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shelby Farms Park, with fitness and cooking demos, music, and giveaways until 2 p.m.
