Lawton Tomato Festival promotes healthy living

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – This weekend marked the 14th annual Tomato Festival! Activities kicked off at the Lawton Farmers Market, and of course, it was all about tomatoes and healthy living.

There was a ton of tomato-based stuff to buy at the market, like cherry tomatoes, tomatoes of different colors, salsa, and even tomato-flavored cookies.

There were also contests to see who had the prettiest, ugliest, best-tasting, and biggest tomatoes.

Additionally, people participated in a salsa competition.

And, there were fun activities to help get families in the area active, like “Let’s Get Moving Lawton” celebrating another year in Shepler Park.

ONIEa and SNAP Education Project Director for the University of Oklahoma, Meredith Scott, explained how the two events came together.

“We came together with the Lawton Farmers Market,” she said, “It’s such a central hub for the community, community engagement and involvement, truly showing the health focus of Lawton.”

According to Scott, the availability of healthy food and exercise had eventgoers feeling better after attending.

“With the healthy food, the physical activity, you really can leave this feeling very holistically healthy,” she said.

If you missed it this year, you can join in on the 15th annual Tomato Festival next year.
