Eating an apple a day may help boost heart health by promoting blood vessel relaxation, reducing inflammation, protecting cells, and supporting healthier arteries, according to recent research.

Apples are rich in fiber and plant compounds that can support healthy blood pressure and overall cardiovascular function, according to VeryWell Health. They contain flavonoids—including quercetin and proanthocyanidins—phenolic acids, and dietary fiber, all of which may benefit the heart. Dr. John Higgins, a cardiologist at UTHealth Houston, explains that these compounds support cardiovascular health through multiple mechanisms:

Relax blood vessels: Flavonoids signal blood vessels to widen slightly, making it easier for blood to flow.

Reduce inflammation: Antioxidants called polyphenols act as natural anti-inflammatories, easing stress on arteries over time, says Cassandra Lepore, a registered dietitian in New York City.

Protect cells: Antioxidants in apples help shield blood vessels from everyday damage caused by unstable molecules in the body.

Support healthier arteries: Soluble fiber can lower cholesterol and maintain artery flexibility, promoting long-term blood pressure control.

Control blood pressure: Apples provide around 150 mg of potassium per fruit, which contributes to daily intake, per The Independent. According to Harvard Medical School, potassium helps relax blood vessel walls, lowering blood pressure and protecting against muscle cramping.
