Healthy diet may help protect against skin cancer, experts say

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — As May marks Skin Cancer Awareness Month, experts are highlighting the potential protective benefits of a colorful diet against skin cancer. Laura Brown, Director of Nutrition for Kroger Health, emphasized the importance of consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables, noting that “nine out of ten Americans are not getting the fruits and vegetables they need.”

A recent report in Eating Well suggests that many people may be missing out on a critical nutrient found in colorful foods that could help guard against skin cancer. While not a substitute for sunscreen, these foods are rich in antioxidants, which are known for their disease-fighting properties.

“Each of those colors have different super powers full of those antioxidants,” Brown said. “Those are disease-fighting particles that can nourish your body and make you feel and look fabulous.”

The National Institutes of Health recently ranked over 3,000 foods for their antioxidant content. Foods with the highest levels include berries, pecans, broccoli, spinach, whole grains like oatmeal, spices such as turmeric, and even dark chocolate. Experts recommend consuming these foods year-round to boost the body’s defenses, not just during the warmer months.
