Hazmat teams respond to Healthy Living in South Burlington

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – With Memorial Day Weekend comes the mass of runners back to the streets of Burlington. The 36th Vermont City Marathon on tap for Sunday, with handcycle, push rim, relay, half, and full competitors eyeing fast times.
Anthea Dexter-Cooper is in her first race weekend as Executive Director at Run Vermont, and she says a lot of familiar faces are expected to compete.
“Philemon (Kipanglat Terer) is returning, he was the champion last year,” Dexter-Cooper said. “A couple of big names from the Vermonter perspective: Chris Gish, along with Nathan Stein, and returning top Vermonter on the men’s side, Nick Orlando. On the women’s side, we have Eliza Kirschner who is coming back. She’s been in the top three before. We’ve got some Vermonters in the invited runner field that we’re excited about like Sarah Shiman. We also have Christine Hagan. For our invited runner field for non-binary athletes, we’ve got Brian and Matthew Powers. Matthew is local. They live in South Burlington and are a coach.”
Weather is certainly a question, but Dexter-Cooper thinks the mild temps could lead to some fast times Sunday.
“I think given the weather, which may not be the best weather for like staying dry as a spectator, with the mist that I think we’re gonna have, it is going to be spectacular weather for putting down a fast marathon time,” Dexter-Cooper said. “We have had eight or nine people over the course of the history of the Vermont City Marathon run in the 2:17 range, and I am really excited about the possibility of someone breaking 2:17.”
