Eat your food as medicine with Vietnam Deli

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Vietnamese eatery in Kailua is serving up fresh dishes that promote healthy and clean eating.

Frank Nguyen, owner and executive chef of Vietnam Deli by the Ripple of Smiles, joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about his food and philosophy.

“It has to be made deliciously fresh, clean and healthy. When it comes to health, I’ve never been one to cut corners. Eat your food as medicine, otherwise you will need to eat your medicine as food,” he said.

Born and raised in southern Vietnam, Nguyen spent most of my life in Saigon before moving to Hawaii seven years ago. He moved his popular Kaimuki restaurant “Ripple of Smiles” to Kailua this year.

He showcased his popular banh mi sandwich, a blend of pork belly, Vietnamese sausage, liver pate, pickled vegetables, and house made sauces piled high on a crispy French baguette.

Nguyen says his shop is different from other Vietnamese eateries because of his priority on healthy ingredients.

“That’s what we would like to introduce to the world,” he said.

Vietnam Deli is located in Kailua Town at 573 Kailua Road and open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
