THE NEW YEAR OFTEN BRINGS BIG GOALS FOR BETTER HEALTH, OF COURSE, BUT STICKING TO HEALTHY EATING HABITS CAN BE REALLY ONE OF THE HARDEST PARTS. SO RESOLUTIONS TO KEEP ARE SO HARD, BUT WITH SO MUCH NUTRITIONAL ADVICE OUT THERE, IT IS EASY TO FEEL OVERWHELMED OR FALL OFF TRACK. ALL RIGHT. SO JOINING US TODAY IS PARTY FROM INTEGRATIVE NUTRITION AND HEALING IN HYDE PARK. SHE’S A REGISTERED DIETITIAN AND FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION SPECIALIST. WHO BETTER TO HELP US WITH THIS. SO LET’S START OFF, WHAT ARE SOME COMMON NUTRITION MYTHS THAT PEOPLE FALL FOR AT THE START OF THE NEW YEAR? OH, GOSH. SO SOME OF THE MOST COMMON MYTHS ARE PEOPLE THINK, OKAY, I’M GONNA, YOU KNOW, DETOXIFY. I’M GONNA DO THIS DETOX DIET FOR 15 DAYS AND THAT’S GONNA CHANGE EVERYTHING. WELL, YOUR BODY DETOXIFIES NATURALLY, YOU DON’T NEED TO FOLLOW A JUICE CLEANSE. IT’S NOT GOING TO HELP WITH ANYTHING. MAYBE IT MIGHT HELP YOU LOSE A LITTLE BIT WEIGHT, BUT IT’S GOING TO COME BACK AS SOON AS YOU STOP THAT DETOXIFICATION. OTHER THINGS ARE CARBS ARE BAD. AGAIN, YOU NEED TO FIND THE RIGHT HEALTHY CARBOHYDRATES LIKE BEANS, LENTILS, WHOLE GRAINS, SWEET POTATOES AND OF COURSE, SO IT’S ABOUT EATING THE RIGHT FOODS. SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS PEOPLE DO IS I’M GOING TO LOSE 20 POUNDS. WELL, THAT’S NOT GOING TO HELP. YOU NEED TO HAVE A GAME PLAN. SO TALK TO US BECAUSE I KNOW IT IS SO EASY TO SAY, OKAY, I’M GOING TO GET HEALTHY. BUT WHAT REALLY ARE THE FIRST STEPS FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GET HEALTHIER AND FEEL BETTER? SO SOME OF THE FIRST STEPS IS, YOU KNOW, YOU NEED TO START SMALL AND ADD THINGS RATHER THAN REMOVING THINGS. SO THINK OF ONE THING THAT YOU CAN ADD, AND IT HAS TO BE REALISTIC. FOR INSTANCE, YOU CAN SAY I’M GOING TO ADD A SERVING OF PROTEIN TO MY BREAKFAST, JUST THAT AND DO THAT CONSISTENTLY FOR TWO MONTHS. ONCE YOU HAVE THAT IN PLACE, THEN YOU CAN START WITH THE NEXT THOUGHT. OKAY, MAYBE I’M GOING TO ADD A FRUIT TO MY LUNCH AND THEN GET THAT IN PLACE. SO SMALL STEPS AND IT HAS TO BE DOABLE. YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE, YOUR STRESS FACTORS, ALL OF THE OTHER THINGS IN YOUR LIFE BEFORE YOU SAY, OH, I’M JUST GONNA IT HAS TO BE NOT. IT HAS TO BE A BEHAVIORAL CHANGE. AND NOT JUST GOAL BASED THING. I’M GOING TO LOSE 20 POUNDS OR I’M GONNA, YOU KNOW, I’M GONNA SHOP AT WHOLE FOODS. I LOVE THAT BECAUSE I OFTEN WILL TALK ABOUT IT. AND I’LL SAY, YOU KNOW, THERE ARE SOME OF THESE DIETS OUT HERE OR, OR THINGS. AND I’LL SAY THAT JUST DOESN’T WORK WITH MY LIFESTYLE, YOU KNOW? ABSOLUTELY. AND YOU TALK ABOUT THE SETTING, THE SMART GOALS, MAKING IT REALLY REALISTIC. BUT IT’S HARD FOR PEOPLE TO GRASP BECAUSE WE HEAR NEW YEAR, NEW ME, AND YOU WANT TO DO THE BIG THING. HOW CAN YOU GET PEOPLE TO JUST START DAY BY DAY? OH, WHAT YOU JUST SAID RIGHT NOW, THIS NEW YEAR, NEW ME, THAT IS THE CONCEPT THAT SO MANY PEOPLE THINK ABOUT. BUT THERE IS NO NEW YOU. YOU ARE. YOU, RIGHT? SO THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS LOOK AT YOURSELF AND SEE WHAT WORKS FOR ME, WHAT HAS WHAT CAN I HOW CAN I BUILD UPON THAT? SO AGAIN, SUSTAINABLE CHANGES. ANOTHER THING TO REMEMBER IS ALWAYS FOLLOW AN 80 OVER 20 RULE. SO WHATEVER GOAL YOU SET, SAY, AS I SAID, EAT A SERVING OF VEGETABLE WITH YOUR LUNCH. THINK ABOUT IT AS I’M GOING TO DO IT. AT LEAST 80% OF THE TIMES, SO THAT IF THERE’S A DAY YOU’RE NOT ABLE TO DO IT DOESN’T MEAN YOUR RESOLUTION IS BROKEN. NOW, THERE’S NO POINT IN FOLLOWING THAT RESOLUTION BECAUSE YOU HAVE THAT 20% OF WIGGLE ROOM. AND IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO KNOW YOURSELF BECAUSE I’VE TRIED TO BE THAT MORNING WORKOUT PERSON. WELL, I’M A NIGHT OWL. I DON’T LIKE GETTING UP EARLY IN THE MORNING, SO I HAVE TO SWITCH IT TO THE NIGHT. SO THAT’S SOMETHING THAT’S WORKED FOR YOU. WORKED FOR ME? YES.
