I used to be a vegetarian in high school and then, before going off to college, became a vegan. My semester on campus proved to be difficult for me as I did not find many good protein options in the campus dining hall, nor could I make any sustaining meal in my dorm. My nail beds became thin, my hair was brittle, and I felt tired all the time. I was likely at my thinnest, but I felt so weak. When I eventually went to my doctor, she asked me about my diet. I confidently replied that I was a vegan. She laughed at me and said that humans eat meat for a reason and that I should change my diet.
animal. is a 2025 documentary that attempts to debunk the myths of the rising prominence of the carnivore diet. The film includes testimonials and interviews from coaches, doctors, and internet influencers who all follow this diet and have seen improvements in their daily lives. These individuals have so far benefited greatly from eating meat, butter, eggs, and by cutting out foods such as carbohydrates and sometimes vegetables altogether. Although, interesting in essence, it seemed to be lacking in data. This is not to shame those who benefit from the diet, but I left the film wondering what would be the long term benefits and consequences?
