The British Heart Foundation explains that all body tissues need essential oxygen and nutrients to function, and a restriction in blood supply can result in cold hands and feet.

When the body is hot, blood vessels near the skin expand (in vasodilation), allowing more blood to flow to the surface to release heat.

On the other hand, when the body is cold, these vessels narrow (in vasoconstriction) to conserve blood flow and retain heat deeper in the body, preventing heat loss, reports the Express.

To keep your extremities warm, it’s crucial to improve the function of your vessels. One way to achieve optimal circulation is by incorporating beneficial nutrients into your diet.

Eating foods high in nitrates provides your body with components that are converted into nitric oxide, which dilates and widens blood vessels.

This process increases blood flow and can improve oxygen delivery to tissues – an effect that is beneficial for cardiovascular health.

Not only are beetroots packed with nitrates, but they’re also a valuable source of potassium and iron – a combination of minerals that support healthy blood flow and pressure.

The root is at its prime during winter, and its health benefits persist all year round. According to the American Heart Association, beets are packed with antioxidants that aid in DNA repair and promote healthy cell function.
