Healthy Kids Festival returns to promote wellness in Las Vegas

The University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Healthy Kids Festival is back for its 13th year, offering a free day of wellness activities for families and children.

The event, held at the East Las Vegas Community Center on Saturday, aimed to make healthy living exciting through music, dancing, hands-on gardening, chef demonstrations, a fruit and vegetable market, games, and educational activities.

Macy Helm is the Nutrition Education Program Senior Coordinator for the event.

Helm says, “This is an opportunity for families and children, with our priority age of 3 to 8 years old, coming to our events to learn about nutrition and physical activity.”

The children were educated on how to fix a healthy plate, showing how certain vegetables were grown, and what a healthy weight is.

Supported by SNAP-Ed, a federally funded grant program, the festival focuses on teaching families how to make their SNAP dollars stretch, cook healthy meals, and lead physically active lifestyles.
