Gladys Vera Shaines of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire passed away on June 25, 2025 with loved ones by her side following a period of declining health.
Gladys was a Seacoast community leader, entrepreneur, a loving and supportive mother, and a proud grandmother. The strong bond she shared with her children and grandchildren was built on mutual adoration and unconditional love.
She grew up in Brookline, MA the youngest child of the late Harvey and Terressa (Aronson) Breger. Following her marriage to the late Robert Shaines, she moved to Portsmouth, NH and became engaged in extensive community service. She was the First Lady of Portsmouth in the early 1960s and served on the boards of many community organizations, including the Sisterhood of Temple Israel, the Salvation Army of Portsmouth, the American Cancer Society Greater Portsmouth Unit, and the Portsmouth Rotary Club. She was also a troop leader for the Girl Scouts.
Gladys was the owner and co-owner of two local businesses, Lunch Couples and Advanced Video Systems.
Admired for her aesthetic sensibilities and loved for her positive and energetic manner, Gladys was a lifelong accomplished pianist who loved to play classical and contemporary music on her baby grand piano. She was an avid tennis player and yoga enthusiast who enjoyed being active until her final days.
She was passionate about healthy living, and dedicated great time and effort in pursuit of living her best life.
She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie Shaines and her husband Dan Wallace, Pamela Ikegami and her husband Rick Roth; three grandchildren, Amber French, Jake French, and Rachel Ikegami.
She was predeceased by her brother Jack Breger, her sister Selma Rittenberg and her daughter Kate Shaines.
The family will hold a private remembrance at a later date. Donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
