MS Agriculture Commissioner debuts ‘Make MS Healthy Again’ initiative

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) -There’s a new push for Mississippians to become healthier by eating local.

Vendors lined the MS Farmer’s Market to promote the local farmers…and address how access to healthy foods remains a top priority.

It’s all apart of MS Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson new initiative called “Make Mississippi Healthy Again.”

Farmers and health professionals collaborated to make the connection between eating locally grown food and living a healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Jennifer Bryan is the president of the Mississippi State Medical Association and she says initiatives like this can push the state forward.

“When we buy local, it is more affordable. It supports the economy. To me, it’s a win win for everybody involved. So when it gets outside of the healthcare arena and other professionals are talking about health, we’re excited to be a part of that collaboration.”

Gipson says now is an important time to support MS farmers in way you can.

“It’s so important that we support our farmers, because it’s harder now to farm than ever before. there are more pressures, there are more costs, there are more weather challenges. And so having the support of our farmers involves supporting them. It also involves eating their food products. So that’s going to help them to be more profitable down the road. At the same time, it’s a win, win, win. Because people are going to be healthy when they do that.”

The MS Farmers Market has also added more markets days for every other Thursday through August 7th.
