SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Fire officials say a chemical reaction in a trash compactor sparked a fire outside the Healthy Living supermarket in South Burlington Thursday.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. at the store on Dorset Street. South Burlington fire officials say a chemical reaction caused by discarded hydrogen peroxide caused smoke to come from the dumpster.
The hazmat team and firefighters responded and contained the reaction. The store remained open.
While hydrogen peroxide by itself is noncombustible, officials say it releases oxygen, which may spontaneously combust or explode.
