National Nutrition Month encourages healthy food choices

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – March is National Nutrition Month, and the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department has some advice that can help you eat healthier!

According to Amy Phelps with the MOV Health Department, National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign that encourages people to learn about making informed and healthier food choices.

Phelps says this is a good time for being more mindful of what you eat everyday while taking a few steps to better your health through what you eat.

One of the few things you can do to begin eating healthier is cutting out processed foods from your diet and eating foods in their purest form.

Phelps explains that a good rule of thumb for this is to “Shop the outer parts of your grocery store, because that’s usually where produce and more fresh food is kept and kind of try to limit more of the ultra-processed foods. So, you’re looking for more food in its raw form as much as possible.”

Phelps also says that it is important to check labels when grocery shopping to ensure that you are getting food items with as little ingredients as possible to ensure they are as while as possible.

“…for example, you do not get all the products that have like a whole bunch of random ingredients that you can’t pronounce the words you know, because then you’re still trying to get, you know, food at its most purest form.”

Limiting sugar can also be an important step for eating healthier along with staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

“…always drink plenty of water that is something that everybody struggles with, and so keeping hydrated is just as important.”
