Red Deerians had the opportunity to learn more about living a healthier life this past weekend.

The 16th annual Healthy Living Expo was held at Westerner Park’s Harvest Centre on Saturday, Jan. 24.

“Today is about every aspect of health and wellness,” said Rayna Heinzlmeir, director of the expo.

“We’re here to showcase health professionals, fitness professionals, health wellness, home wellness and more. It’s a really unique opportunity for people to explore what’s local and important for their own health and wellness.”

The event is held in January each year.

“A lot of people come into the new year with certain goals in mind. This gives them the opportunity a couple weeks later to get some help if they aren’t able to get going on their own,” Heinzlmeir said.

There were more than 90 booths at this year’s edition of the event.

“We’re limited in how much space we have during the expo,” Heinzlmeir said.

“We actually have a waiting list, which is really great. The community and business owners really embrace coming to this event. It’s great to have everyone in one spot so people can ask questions, shop and learn what’s happening.

“With our vendors, it’s 50-50 on how many are returning and how many are new. We have a strong staple of anchor businesses, as well as fresh and new vendors each year. That keeps it interesting for people coming back every year.”

There was also a main stage with several demonstrations throughout the day, including a headstand competition and a plank challenge.

“The stage demos are a fun way for people to see what’s going on as well. We also have a kid zone … with an interactive play area.”

The event has grown significantly over the years, Heinzlmeir added.

“The first Healthy Living Expo we did was in a hotel banquet room. We had tables instead of booths. That first one was great — it was packed and informative. But now we have more space for people to showcase what they’re all about,” said Heinzlmeir.

“That extra space gives people the opportunity to tuck into someone’s space at the show to ask questions. It’s a really fun vibe.”
